Lambeth Conference logo Lambeth Conference Begins

The Lambeth Conference is one of the global Anglican Communion's Instruments of Unity.

It takes place every ten years at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It is the one occasion when all bishops can meet for worship, study and conversation. Archbishops, diocesan, assistant and suffragan bishops are invited.

Also invited are bishops from other churches 'in communion' with the Anglican Communion, bishops from United Churches and a number of ecumenical guests.

Spouses of the 800+ bishops who attend are invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury's wife to a parallel, independent gathering: the Spouses' Conference.

The current Archbishop of Canterbury - Rowan Williams - has called the next Lambeth Conference for July 2008. His wife, Jane, will convene the Spouses' Conference.

Reflections on Lambeth

The Rt. Rev. Eugene T. Sutton, bishop of Maryland and the Rt. Rev. John L. Rabb, bishop suffragan, have been invited to attend Lambeth. Our bishops will periodically send updates and reflections from Lambeth.

We give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham, and have raised up prophets, kings and priests, never leaving your temple untended. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen. (Prayer of Consecration, BCP, p. 520)

Diocesan Convention may be over for this year, but the work continues. In this edition of MCN Online read about the ongoing efforts of the Task Force on Reparations for Slavery and contemplate a poem by famed Harlem poet Georgia Douglas Johnson. Good works continue at our churches as St. Mark’s Church, Lappans, shares its unique Lenten worship, St. John’s Church, Mt. Washington, feeds the hungry, and St. John's Church, Ellicott City, is honored for its commitment to Camp Amazing Grace.

Episcopal Community Services of Maryland Praised by Archbishop Tutu

Archbishop Desmond Tutu Peter Dunn, major gifts and marketing manager for the organization, set in motion the endorsement after hearing Bishop Tutu speak in Washington, D.C. “I contacted Archbishop Tutu through The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation in New York City and asked him to take a look at our website and if he was moved, to consider writing a letter of support.” The Rt. Rev. John L. Rabb, bishop-in-charge of Maryland, wrote a letter of recommendation to the peace center on behalf of ECSM. Impressed with what he saw, Tutu sent this letter to ECSM.
